Designing a Pool House that Works for You
The Ultimate Backyard Upgrade
There is something about a pool that instantly turns a backyard into a destination. It becomes the place where kids spend entire afternoons, where friends gather on warm evenings, and where memories are made all summer.
But as beautiful as a pool can be, it can come with clutter, wet footprints and the constant shuffle between house and water. Storage problems abound, and you want to protect a calm aesthetic rather than floaty chaos.
That is where a pool house comes in. More than just a luxury add-on, a well-designed pool house adds function, comfort and lasting value to your property.

A Beautiful Black A-Frame Poolhouse
Built in 2022, Mike and Melody Carfagno’s distinctive black A-frame pool house has become the true heart of their backyard. Designed as an open, airy structure with two exposed sides, it faces the main house for easy back-and-forth traffic, especially important since they did not want wet feet crossing their walnut floors. Inside, the layout includes a convenient bathroom and a storage area with a large vintage sink for rinsing and organizing pool gear and grilling supplies.
Melody calls it their “shady spot,” explaining that it is where everyone gathers, complete with outdoor furniture, a large TV and a barbecue area her husband added just off the structure. Metal finishes inside keep the space waterproof while making the plumbing fixtures pop against the matte black design. This pool house is one of four projects Yutzy has completed for the Carfagnos, including a garage, large shop and lean-to.
“Yutzy is so easy to work with,” Melody said. “It was up quickly, well done. The quality is amazing. They don’t cheat on quality.” After comparing costs, the couple found the pricing fair, and appreciated the team’s efficiency, friendliness and craftsmanship, even recalling the moment the owners sang inside their finished shop on the final day, a reflection of the kind of people they are to work with.

A Relaxing Poolside Cabana
This compact poolside cabana proves that you do not need a massive footprint to make a big impact. Finished in a bold blue exterior, the structure adds personality and charm while delivering practical storage and shade right where it is needed most. Its efficient design keeps pool essentials organized and creates a defined gathering spot, showing how even a smaller build can dramatically elevate both the function and feel of a backyard.

Poolside Guest House with Timber-Framed Porch
Matt Britt’s 26×26 pool house is a strong example of how one structure can serve more than one purpose. Built after the pool was completed, the space was designed to function as both a pool house and a guest retreat. Inside, it includes a full kitchen, bathroom, shower, bathtub, washer and dryer, and beds, making it fully livable. The timber-framed porch extends the footprint outdoors, creating a welcoming gathering area that blends enclosed comfort with open-air relaxation.
While it sees heavier use in the summer months as a pool house, it easily shifts into guest accommodations when needed. As Matt put it, “They’re quick, reliable, and right on the price,” noting that the project was completed in about half the time of a typical contractor. Having also partnered with Yutzy on a 20×20 patio cover, he described the team as personable and easy to work with from start to finish.

A Practical Pool House – Garage Combo
This 32×32 structure was designed with versatility in mind, combining poolside comfort with practical garage storage in one cohesive build. The layout allows for easy access from the pool while still carving out dedicated space for vehicles, equipment or workshop needs. As more homeowners look to maximize every square foot on their property, multi-use designs like this are growing in popularity, offering both lifestyle benefits and everyday functionality without the need for separate buildings.

The Appeal of a Pool House
A pool house brings order and intention to your outdoor space. Instead of towels draped over patio furniture and guests tracking water on your wood floors (every dad’s nightmare) – everything has a place.
For many homeowners, the biggest appeal is convenience. A nearby bathroom, changing room or outdoor shower keeps traffic contained and makes hosting easier. Storage for floats, chemicals and towels keeps the pool area clean and organized.
There is also the entertaining factor. A pool house naturally becomes a gathering space. Add shaded seating, a bar area or even a small kitchen, and your backyard begins to feel like a private resort.
Beyond daily use, a thoughtfully designed structure can boost property value. A finished outbuilding with plumbing, power and architectural character adds both visual interest and functional square footage. It is not just about the pool. It is about creating a cohesive outdoor living experience.
Pool Houses For Year-Round Enjoyment
While many people associate pool houses with summer, the right design makes them useful year round. With insulation, heating and cooling, and thoughtful layout, a pool house can shift seamlessly from swim-season headquarters to cozy fall retreat or winter gathering space.
Add a fireplace, enclosed porch or small kitchenette, and it becomes the perfect spot for game nights, holiday overflow or a quiet place to unwind away from the main house. Instead of sitting empty once the pool is covered, a well-built pool house can continue to serve your family in every season.
Types of Pool Houses
Not all pool houses look the same. The right design depends on how you plan to use the space and how it fits into your property.
Cabana or Shed Style
A smaller cabana or shed-style pool house offers simplicity and efficiency. Not only do these structures offer storage and shade, they provide a place to stash gear and relax out of the sun. They are ideal for smaller backyards or homeowners who want a clean, practical solution without a large footprint.
Timber Frame Pavilion Style
For those who love open-air gathering spaces, a pavilion-style pool house delivers shade and architectural beauty. Exposed timber framing creates a warm, inviting feel, while the open layout keeps everything connected to the pool. These spaces often pair well with outdoor kitchens, fireplaces or dining areas.
Fully Enclosed Pool House
A fully enclosed structure offers maximum flexibility. With insulated walls, windows and climate control, this type of pool house can include a bathroom, changing room or even guest accommodations. It becomes an extension of your home, usable beyond the swim season.
Pool House and Garage Combo
For homeowners who want to maximize square footage, a dual-purpose design makes sense. Combining a pool house with garage or workshop space allows you to serve multiple needs with one cohesive structure. It is a smart solution for larger properties or families who want both lifestyle and storage in one build.
Pool House Features to Consider
Before finalizing a design, think carefully about how the space will function.
Layout features might include a half bath, a full bathroom, a dedicated changing room or built-in storage walls. If your goal is to reduce traffic inside the main home, plumbing and layout will be key considerations.
Comfort features can make a big difference. Ceiling fans, insulation, heating and cooling, and a covered porch area help extend usability throughout the year.
For those who love to entertain, luxury additions such as an outdoor kitchen, bar seating, fireplace or pizza oven can transform the structure into a true gathering hub.
Design details also matter. Timber framing, siding style, stain color and roofing choices should complement your home and create a unified look across your property.
How to Start Planning Your Pool House
If you are considering a pool house, begin with how you want to live in the space. Do you need a bathroom to keep wet feet out of your home? A gathering area for hosting? A quiet place to relax in the shade?
Think about traffic flow between the pool and structure, long-term maintenance and how the design will complement your existing home. Planning utilities early, especially water and electric, can prevent costly adjustments later.
A pool house should feel like it was always meant to be there. When thoughtfully designed, it does more than serve the pool. It elevates your entire backyard experience.
